Bartholomäus Spranger, Vulkan und Maia, 1585 |
The month of May is named after Maia, the goddess of growth and related to fertility.
Milton wrote: “Hail bounteous May that dost inspire Mirth and youth, and warm desire.”
The Anglo-Saxons called May thrimilce, since in May cows could be milked three times a day.
